Secret Service investigates reported theft of Romney tax files, $1 million extortion threat – The Washington Post.

Someone claiming to have stolen Mitt Romney‘s tax records from an accounting office in Franklin, Tennessee, is trying to extort $1 million from the Republican presidential candidate in exchange for keeping them private.

The Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies are investigating, but there is no evidence any information was compromised.

It is possible, though. Hackers are pretty savvy. One adept at sneaking in undetected, gathering information and vanishing without a trace could have pulled this off.

Or it could be a hoax.

I can’t help but find this story intriguing, at least for its “what if” factor. What if someone is holding this information for ransom? What if it is released and sways the election in November? What if Mitt Romney really didn’t pay any taxes for first decade of the 21st century?

Things just got a lot more interesting…
