Dumb ass of the week, vol. 1

Todd Akin, GOP Senate candidate: ‘Legitimate rape’ rarely causes pregnancy.

Missouri GOP Senate nominee, Rep. Todd Akin, said this weekend that “legitimate rape” rarely causes pregnancy. As such, he opposes abortion in all cases and without exception.

Is it me, or is this about the dumbest thing you have ever heard?

For starters, women who are raped sometimes do get pregnant. A 1996 study indicated that roughly 32,000 pregnancies a year result from rape. This equates to around 5% of all rape victims.

Do you think Akin should have done a little research before making such a ridiculous claim?

Oddly enough, there are lots of Republicans who oppose abortion, but who allow for exceptions in the case of rape or incest. After all, who wants to parent the child of a rapist or a child doomed to mental and psychological problems because of “inbreeding,” as is the case with incest?

Then consider what Akin refers to as “legitimate rape.” What makes one rape more legitimate than another? And if rape can be legitimate, then how might it be illegitimate? Does this simply refer to false accusations of rape? Or rapes that simply aren’t reported, which represents quite a few of them?

To me, Akin’s comments defy intelligence and simply illustrate what many of us already know: many politicians have no clue.

I urge any of you who live in Missouri to vote for the “other guy” this election. Otherwise this jackass could be your next Senator.

  1. words fail me 😦 this makes me so angry i dont have the right words to describe how ill this man is making me feel right now, thank you for sharing

    • You’re welcome, kizzy. And I felt the same way after reading it. Sure, I’m Pro-Life, but I can understand both sides. I just don’t think rape and incest should be overlooked in either case. And people like Akin who make ridiculous and outright dumb claims certainly don’t help matters much. Sorry to get you fired up, but I’m right there with you 🙂

  2. Gross. I’m all for personal opinion, but even just reading “legitimate rape” is enough for me to want to vomit all over him. Also: no man should get to make decisions that have to do with vaginas. Unless you have one, you shouldn’t get to make the calls. It all just pisses me off 🙂

    • I completely agree, lunatic, and that’s why I’m Pro-Life. It’s not that I agree with abortion, especially for contraceptive purposes. I just think women have the right to decide for themselves. Please don’t let this a-hole turn you off to more open-minded, realistic guys 🙂

    • I am pro-choice as well. I feel it is the more fair and rational side of the argument. I do feel that the decision ultimately belongs to the woman who is pregnant, but it does take two to make a baby. I feel the man should be involved in the discussion. Not that he should make the choice, but rather, that he should offer whatever help the women may need and desire and then be there to be emotionally and financially supportive no matter the decision. Just my two cents. It really bothers me when a guy won’t take responsibility and abandons a woman he got pregnant.

      • It bothers me too, Paul. And I truly appreciate your outlook. I think we might share a brain. LOL

      • No man has the right to decide if a woman should have an abortion or not.If men had to go through childbirth and all the things a mother does we would have been extinct a long time ago.Of course that would be better for the planet and the other creatures on it.

  3. I’m with lunatic.Women should make the decisions about their own bodies.Akin is an ass.He needs a good smack in the head.Rattle his brain,if he has one, which is doubtful.

  4. He’s just another misogynistic asshole. Dangerous, dangerous people.

    • And there seem to be a lot of them out there, Impy. It’s frightening…

      • It is frightening. What’s worse is that my parents vote for people like this 😦 On the one hand, it makes me crazy that they support these types of policies but on the other, I’m kind of glad I was raised with parents with those views, because it made me go in the other direction.

      • I had a similar experience with my parents. Sent me to the liberal side of the yard…

  5. It amazes me not only how incredibly ignorant Akin is, but also the dim view he must have of the public to feel that he can serve up this remarkably stupid point of view. Of course, the fact that he got elected may indicate a large number of his constituents are actually that dumb.

I feel so angry about what Akin said that I don’t think I can even make any sense if I try to comment about it. I wish his head had been in my bucket when I had gastro on Saturday night. I could’ve vomitted on him at least half a dozen times. I’m sorry I missed the opportunity.
Having been brought up by a paedophile father and miscarried a baby of rape when I was 14, I have zero tolerance for comments or opinions such as Akin has spouted here. I hate him. I hate him.
    Rach.

    • I can appreciate that, Rach. And I’m very sorry you had to go through all that…

      • purpleowltree1234

Thanks. It wasn’t for pity, it was just to say, we who have been raped *and* gotten pregnant from it, are out here. More than people probably realise.
        Rach.

    • So sorry for what you went through.I’ve had some bad experiences with lowlife scum myself. The important thing is what you do with your life now. What was done to you wasn’t your fault. You’re not responsible for assholes.Hope you have a great day.

      • purpleowltree1234

Thanks doglady. I’m sorry you’ve had experiences with lowlife scum too. You are right, it wasn’t our fault, and I’m not responsible for him. My life consists of immersing myself in things which are meaningful now. I till my plot of life with peace and compassion.
        Rach.

  7. Unless I missed part of his statement on Sunday he didn’t address any of his “off-the-cuff” remarks about legitimate rape or the fact that pregnacies DO happen from rape, all he said was he conveys empathy for these women but he still supports the lives of all innocents.
Sometimes I really wonder about this “Free world” we live in.
Once again good luck in November as even though Romney and Ryan state they don’t agree with Akin and believe there should be exceptions, looking at Ryan’s past record anyway makes me question that.
It is sad that this right has to be fought for over and over and over.
