They Shot Camacho!
As a breed, many boxers tend to be larger-than-life loudmouths with unlimited arrogance… I mean confidence… and flamboyant personalities. And none compared to the king of braggadocio, Puerto Rico‘s Hector “Macho” Camacho.
In his long and storied career, Camacho fought and defeated everyone from Sugar Ray Leonard to Roberto Duran. And every step of the way, he always played to the cameras and never shut up about his “greatness.”
Until now, that is.
Yesterday, Camacho was found near the bar Azuquita in his hometown of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, shot and bleeding. Apparently the 50-year-old boxer was in the passenger seat of a car, with a friend behind the wheel, when two men opened fire on the vehicle. Camacho’s friend, Adrian Mojica, was shot in the neck and lower back and died instantly. A bullet hit Camacho in the left side of the face and eventually lodged in his right shoulder.
Camacho was rushed to a nearby hospital and is now in critical condition. The bullet fractured two of vertebrae in his neck and, if he survives his wounds, Camacho could have trouble walking.
No one has been arrested yet because the suspects escaped following a shootout with police in a residential district. Of course, Puerto Rico is an island, so it’s really just a matter of time before these assailants are caught.
I only hope Roberto and Sugar Ray aren’t visiting PR right now. They would certainly have the motive…
