Me

Me

Thanks for visiting Gnostic Bent!

This is me: Scott M.

Who am I, you ask? Well, this is the part that I always struggle with: how to label myself. I’m not a big fan of labels, but I’ll give it a shot. Any of these might fit, so please take your pick…

Student Advocate. Academic Advisor. Freelance Writer & Editor. Student Affairs Professional. Freethinker. Agnostic. Liberal. Father. Cinephile. Amateur Screenwriter. Tall Drink of Water. Homo Sapien.

Originally from Chicago and the son of an Argentinean father and American mother, I currently reside in eastern North Carolina, where I work at a small, private college. I am a proud member of our Student Success Center, where I direct a conditional-acceptance program for our at-risk freshmen and perform a multitude of other duties–academic advising, teaching, tutoring, consulting, editing, writing… you name it.

In terms of education, I feel like I have what I need, at least from a formal perspective. My BA in English/Journalism came from NC State University, followed by an MA in English/Creative Writing from East Carolina University. I would probably pursue my doctorate if (a) it didn’t cost so damn much and (b) I had the time to do it. And no, I’m not a huge believer in online degrees. There is simply no substitute for classroom learning and interaction, at least to some degree.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, watching television and movies, playing golf, traveling (when I can afford it), swimming… this is starting to sound like a singles ad, so hopefully this is enough.

I am excited that you chose to visit my blog and to read a little more about me. Hit me up anytime you have questions or feel like making contact. You can never have too many friends and connections, to be sure.

Thanks and enjoy Gnostic Bent!

  1. I am interviewing for a position as an academic advisor soon, do you like the job?

    • That sounds great, Elizabeth. And yes, I do enjoy it a lot. Granted, it doesn’t pay as well as it could, but there are lots of other rewards (like helping students find a direction in life and guiding them towards graduation). I wish you luck with your interview and will be here if you ever want to chat again. Look me up sometime and I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you in the meantime. And thanks for stopping by, too!

  2. Hey,
Amazing blog! Looking forward to exploring more of your posts! 🙂
    Regards,
    HA

  3. I once asked my wife’s nephew at a HS (pig-pickin) graduation party what he would be studying at ECU. His reply? “Trfmgmnt”. “What was that,” I queried? Again, “Trfmgmnt”. What exactly is that, I asked, to which he replied, “owno-gotaksmomma”. Good Luck!

  4. Hi Scott. Enjoying your blog. I can see we have a similar sarcastic sense of humour. I will enjoy reading more! Keep it up!

  5. Hey Scott,

I apologize for contacting you here with this, but I wasn’t sure how else to get a hold of you with my question.

Basically, I would be in your debt if you would check out my blog baldforbabes.wordpress.com and decide if this is an event you would be interested in helping me promote. I feel really cheeky asking this, but I swear it’s a good cause: I’m soliciting people to cut their hair/shave their heads on 1 June 2013 (International Children’s Day) and donate it to Locks of Love (locksoflove.org). Just take a look and let me know what you think. I will completely understand if you’re not comfortable endorsing or promoting it, and I am available if you have any questions or concerns. (Contact info is on the site.)

Again, really sorry for asking here. Feel free to remove this.

    Cheers!

    • I will not remove your comment and yes, I am more than happy to help promote this great cause, Adelaide. Erin sounds like an amazing person and I commend you on continuing her altruistic ways. So first, I will go ahead and reblog your page and promise to mention it periodically throughout the year as much as possible. You may have to remind me since work can get so overwhelming sometimes, but otherwise COUNT ME IN. I really appreciate being involved in this and no, I am not bothered in the least that you contacted me here 🙂

    • I just re-blogged your main page with a little commentary, Adelaide. Please check it out and let me know if any changes should be made 🙂

      • One more week til Bald for Babes! EEK! ^_^

Thank you again for the promo on your site. I’m soliciting a friend of mine’s student film crew to film and also promote the event so we can make it a proper thing next year.

Wish me luck! Oh, and let me know if/when you’re in Philly so I can buy you a beer.

      • Sounds great to me, photo! Please keep me posted and good luck on such a worthwhile event! I know it will be great! 🙂

  6. I see where following your blog was the right thing to do. You ooze awesomeness!

  7. u do have lots of hair, I thought you were bluffing 😉

  8. Just letting you know – not complaining. I’m using a 19″ external monitor on my laptop via the VGA connector and your blog page is seriously hard to read. There’s some text above the Ten Things … header, but I can’t read it. Something about the colour/typeface. Your page is fuzzy, much more than any other blog page. Many other things on the page which are too indistinct to see. Other web pages look OK.

Why am I using the VGA connector? Yeah, my HDMI output has failed, so I’m forced to.

  9. Sorry, 19″ ASUS LCD at 1600×900 resolution, not its native 1920×1080. As I say, yours is the only page I’ve had trouble with. Dunno why.

  10. “this is starting to sound like a singles ad, so hopefully this is enough.” – Just cracked me up!
Bloggers/writers like you, just make the blogsphere more fun!

    Hey Scott,
You look awesome with short hair too.
    Rach.

  12. Since I have just entered the blogging world myself, I find reading humor from a different perspective, refreshing. I commend your desire to help point students in the right direction.
Keep making the world laugh, we need to counterbalance the tears we get from politicians. 🙂

    • Thanks so much for the kind words, enthusiasm. Laughs are definitely better than tears, and I’m glad I can help lighten things up from time to time. I really appreciate it and hope to see you again soon!

  13. Hey Scott, I just nominated you for the “Tell Me More About Yourself” Award. I think you are very funny and smart. 🙂

  14. I just started blogging this year and was recently switched onto WordPress from blogspot. I found your blog on Freshly Pressed and I’m really glad I did. I love your writing style and sense of humour. I’ll look forward to reading many more!

  15. Hi Scott, don’t want to be a pain in the A** but you did say remind you. Those poor dogs in Korea really need help. What they’re doing to them would give you nightmares. You could make a real difference.PLEASE HELP!!!

    • You aren’t bugging me, doglady. I am definitely going to look into it. Just been busy with work and some other things. I haven’t forgotten, but thanks for reminding me nonetheless. It is a serious issue…

  16. Thanks for that but the longer it takes for help the more of them will suffer and die. Please make it a priority.

  22. Hi Scott,

I’m a big fan of your blog and an admirer of your writing. As you know, I’m a screenwriter and independent filmmaker. This is a big favor to ask, so I understand if you would rather not do this. I’m currently running a Kickstarter campaign to fund my new short. My partner and I are developing it as a series and have a contact at ABC/Disney who can get us a meeting. Would you mind promoting the campaign on your blog? We just want to get more eyes on the page and let the pitch do its work.

It’s a great project and we have 3 very talented young actors in the lead we would love to give the opportunity to. Thank you for your time and either way, I’ll always be a fan.
